Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)

The kidney is an important organ in filtering waste through urine. Healthy kidneys are able to produce an average of 1-2 liters of urine per day. Kidneys have fine filter cells known as glomerulus. The role of the glomerulus is to filter the blood flow in the body by only allowing waste products such as urea and water to be removed through urine.

The inability to filter certain substances causes the urine to contain protein, glucose and blood. Early detection of kidney disease is very important in planning treatment for patients. Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) is one of the methods used to determine kidney function.

Definition

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) is a test to determine the status of kidney function. This test requires a blood sample. eGFR indicates the rate of blood filtration by the glomerulus per minute. This rate is determined based on the age, weight and gender of the patient. A low eGFR level indicates that the patient may be at risk of having chronic kidney disease.

The purpose

This test aims to determine the level of kidney function, especially in chronic kidney patients. Apart from that, this test is also recommended for diabetic patients, patients who frequently suffer from urinary tract infections, heart patients, high blood pressure patients and also patients who suffer from blocked urinary tract. This is because these diseases are closely related to kidney function. Among other factors that contribute to kidney disease are family history, advanced age, ethnic group and smoking habits. Patients who take medications that are at risk of affecting kidney cells are also monitored for eGFR levels.

Through the test results, the doctor can plan the best way to treat the patient. Early detection and treatment of affected kidneys can save kidney cells that are still functioning and reduce the need for dialysis treatment.
